Many Hornby children are missing out on the support they need to feel secure, to access opportunities and to reach their potential.

But when the problems they face can be so complex, what can any of us do to help?

We want to help
Hornby kids thrive.

The problem

Many Hornby children are missing out on opportunities that could help them grow, discover passions and build their confidence – things like arts, sports and cultural experiences.

For some, it’s because those opportunities aren’t available at their school, and their families don’t have the time or the funds for extra-curriculars. For others, they miss out for more complicated reasons – they’re rushing home after school to look after siblings, or they can’t afford shoes for sport, or they’re not making it to school at all.

So how can you support Hornby kids to thrive, to access opportunities and have support to follow them through?

Become a Hornby Champion.

How do we make a change?

How?

We’re creating new opportunities for Hornby children through our school-based opportunity hubs, as part of our Longitudinal Whānau Support programme (LWS).

Our first Opportunity Hub piloted at Gilberthorpe School last year, and has already provided 15 different opportunities for children at the school – things like a Drama Club, Basketball coaching, Taiaha, Hip Hop, a school garden, a Construction Club, a Lego Club, and opportunity to film and star in their own movie.

More than 2000 individual learning hours have already provided to children through the Gilberthorpe Hub, and we hope to expand into four more Hornby schools over the coming years.

As well as providing opportunities to try new activities, we’re also connecting the children and the school with volunteers and groups in the wider community who have come in to help with opportunities – groups like Epic Sports or the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Through the Longitudinal Whānau Support programme we are also helping children from the most at-risk whānau overcome more significant barriers, and access more intensive support when they need it.

Who?

We are a local community trust based in the heart of Hornby called Te Whare Awhero (Hope House) and our work focuses on the southwest of Christchurch.

As well as our Longitudinal Whanau Support programme and opportunity hubs, we provide not for profit counselling services, community support services, Horizons Oscar before and after school and holiday programmes, and Mana Ake school-based mental health support services to children.

Head to tewhareawhero.org to learn more.

How can you help?

To make a long term commitment to our local schools, we can’t rely only on Government grants or sponsorship, which can come and go. We also need the support of our community.

By becoming a Hornby Champion, your support of $50.00 per month will help us to continue our work and bring hope to local families.

We’ll provide you with regular updates on what your support has made possible, as well as opportunities to get involved directly.

You can help some of the most vulnerable Hornby children to thrive. You can help them access opportunities to grow, expand their horizons and help them realise their potential.

What is a
Hornby Champion?

Support

A Hornby Champion believes in potential. It means that as a local business or individual, you have a passion for supporting local children, youth, and their families to be all that they can be. You are a Champion of Hope.

If you are wanting to be philanthropic (really generous!) to those in need, then we can help you as you help us.

We love partnerships with local people and businesses who want to help make a difference in our community. If this is one of your values, we can support you to put this into
action.

Hope

Our goal is to create hope for those in need – it’s our underlying mission and drive at Hornby Champion. We strive to see the youth and whanau of our local community given all the opportunity they need in life to succeed. Our focus has always been on those in need, and we would love you to help us make true impact happen in our community.

Now more than ever, we need to bring hope to those that are struggling, or to those that simply need our support.

Become a champion to your community – partner with us!
